We have expanded our business for local customers with a new ECU Remapping service. Since Perry McCarthy, ex-racing driver and The Original Stig, bought Top Gear Tuning earlier this year, the business has benefited from a 35% growth boom.

Perry McCarthy said: “A remap can improve the performance of your vehicle by up to 30% and result in a more responsive engine, which makes it easier to overtake. Fuel economy can be improved by up to 15% due to a reduction in fuel consumption. With the increase in fuel prices, a remap can be a great investment. We’ve applied ECU Remapping to over 20,000 vehicles so far.

The vehicle can also be driven in a higher gear at slower speeds, thus reducing revs, and this also applies to driving when fully loaded, towing or driving through elevation changes. A remap can take just 30 minutes, with prices from £200 upwards, depending on your vehicle.”

Paul Freeman, Top Gear Bridport director, said: “There are over 270 approved Top Gear Tuning dealers in the UK and internationally. Our local Bridport business is at our heart - as well as ECU Remapping, our Gore Cross site offers same-day, custom built exhausts, tyres and MOTs.”

Ex-racing driver and the Original Stig, Perry McCarthy, explains ECU Remapping:

What?

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is part of the computer in your vehicle’s engine. It uses a map to direct the engine’s fuel output.

An ECU remap reconfigures this computer - we look at the vehicle’s map, refresh it and give it specific, tailor-made instructions.

Why?

Because engine manufacturers export cars all over the world they have to keep the ECU at a standard default level - they cannot compensate for the climate, different tax/emission regulations plus the wide ranges of fuel quality.

New cars are rarely fully optimised for ultimate performance.

Who?

Any vehicle with an ECU, including cars, bikes, vans, trucks and HGVs, normally manufactured after 2000, can have an ECU remap.

Previously there was a similar process called ‘chipping’ with a more dubious reputation, but ECU Remapping itself is a completely safe process. It is just allowing the engine to perform as it can and should do without the compromises.

Where?

Top Gear Tuning, Gore Cross Business Park, Bridport.

When?

It takes around 30 minutes to an hour in most cases. Some vehicles’ ECUs cannot be accessed remotely so must be removed to be remapped, which can extend the process.

How much?

The cost of a remap starts from £200 and will vary heavily depending on your vehicle.
