11/08/2005: "247hp for New Golf R32"

speeding (30k image)The next generation of Volkswagen’s hugely successful Golf R32 will make its world premiere on Septmeber’s Frankfurt auto show in Germany.

Based on the Mk.V Golf, still unavailable in America but scheduled to debut still in the 2006 model year, the new R32 has kept the 3.2-liter V6 engine that, coupled with four-wheel-drive, has helped the previous-gen car to more than double VW’s initial sales expectations.

But thanks to the VW Group’s new FSI direct fuel injection technology, the new car now develops an impressive 247 horsepower, 10 more than its predecessor.

While in Europe the R32 battles in the “hot hatch” segment with the 250-hp Alfa Romeo 147 GTA or the UK-only 237-hp Vahxall Astra VXR, in the U.S. the four-wheel-drive machine is bound to challenge the Subaru WRX and Mitsubishi Evo for top autocross honors nationwide.

The 2006 R32 will be available with VW’s double-clutch DSG six-speed manumatic, which should propel the car from 0 to 60mph in six second flat and then to a top speed of 155mph.
