28/04/2005: "Fitting Your New Alloys..."

If you're unable to get to a depot for your alloy wheels and are buying by mail order, you'll be fitting them yourself. Here is some information to help you do it correctly:

Before you start, you need to ensure you have the right sort of bolts - these have various diameters, threads and seatings. We'll be able to advice you on what specification of bolt you should be using.

Next you need to jack your car up, be sure to use axle stands and chock the wheels still in contact with the ground with the parking brake applied. Put an alloy wheel up to the car and check the bolt holes line up, that the wheel locates on the hub correctly and that there is wheel arch, suspension strut and brake caliper clearance. If you've upgraded your brakes recently you need to seek advice with us before you order.

When tightening the bolts or nuts you need to do this to the manufacturer's specified torque. Tighten them progressively until they're three-fourths tight and finish tightening once the car is lowered. You also need to re-torque after about 100 miles as they will compress slightly.
