From January 1st 2007 motor manufacturers are responsible for disposing of their own brands when car owners decide to scrap them.

This will involve manufacturers nominating a specific service provider to take their customers’ old vehicles free of charge, to comply with the End of Life Vehicle (ELV) Directive.

However, drivers will still have the option of taking their car to a nearby independent authorised treatment facility – and may even be paid to do so.

The ELV Directive prescribes the issuing of a Certificate of Destruction (CoD) when a vehicle is delivered by its last owner to an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) to be recycled.

A certificate can only be issued by an authorised facility - whether it be independently run or affiliated with a vehicle manufacturer - and acts as proof that a vehicle has been destroyed, meaning the owner’s car tax and other obligations are at an end.

It also shows that the car has gone through the correct recycling processes, ensuring minimal environmental damage by stopping lubricants and oils seeping into the water table and recycling as many materials as possible.

“Independent authorised treatment facilities are located across the country, making it easy for all drivers to comply with the legislation and help the environment,” explains Derek Campbell of Recycleyourcar.co.uk, the website designed to help drivers find their nearest ATF.

Recycleyourcar.co.uk is an initiative from Sims Group UK Limited that aims to provide the UK car owner with an easy to use facility for finding their nearest authorised treatment facility.
