Mystery mule laid bare

Posted on December 13, 2006 @ 10:56 am

Despite widespread rumours that the basic skeleton of the model shown here was a top-secret McLaren test car, the bare chassis is actually a technology mule for a group of University of Munich designers.

Unveiled at last week’s Essen Motor Show, the EHV - Experimental Handling Vehicle - has some heavyweight backers. Public investors include BMW, MINI, Mercedes, Audi, Brembo and Pirelli. They are all hoping that, in working together, they can develop cost-effective technology for use in a wide range of models.

Look closely at the project prototype and you will notice race car-style inboard suspension and an advanced tubular chassis which forms a super-stiff rollcage structure. A mid-mounted engine, complete with an enormous exhaust system, is also plain to see.

With testing still ongoing, the next stage in this car’s development process will be to get a German MoT carried out on it, allowing public road trials. But don’t expect to see the wacky two-seater on the Autobahn - designs are already on the drawing board to cover the mechanicals in a sleek roadster body.
