Badly lit roadsigns at night are destined to become a thing of the past thanks to clever new ‘glow-in-the-dark’ technology.

The new signs don’t need bulbs or a powerful electricity supply, as they are printed on special material that shines on its own when powered by a small current.

“The trouble with ordinary illuminated road signs is that the light can be patchy,” said Mark Walter of inventor One2See in Sutton, Surrey. “Ours is illuminated evenly so it can be seen clearly from further away.” The Department for Transport is backing trials of the signs. Large-scale motorway ones could follow.
