For some people - especially those willing to fork out more than $280,000 for a brand-new Lamborghini Murcielago - 572 horsepower just isn’t enough.

Aware of such realities, the Audi-run sports car maker from Sant’Agata Bolognese is readying an all-new V12 engine for its flagship supercar. According to British magazine Autocar, the new unit is expected to break the 600-hp barrier, bumping the current output by some 50 horses to about 620.

The decision to increase the power of a car capable of topping at 205 miles per hour may sound like overkill, but Lamborghini’s rationale is based on making the Murcielago’s premium of about $110k over the 500-hp Gallardo “entry” car’s price of $172,600 worthy in terms of performance, as the Gallardo’s weight advantage makes its track numbers very similar to those of its bigger brother.

The new poweplant will put the big Lambo alongside some very rarified competition in the 600+ club, such as the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren and the Ferrari Enzo. The car will also receive minor front and rear-wing changes to improve its aerodynamics with the stronger engine.
