4x4 tyres are designed specifically for four wheel drive vehicles, and as the four wheel drive market continues to grow at the fastest rate of any form of car, 4x4 car tyres are growing in popularity and demand.
With the Porsche Cayenne and BMWs offerings, some 4x4 models, cars now require a performance tyre. These performance tyres are designed for mostly road use and will have a slightly softer tread compound. The 4x4 performance tyres are designed to be used in the same way car performance tyres are used, and will give 4x4 drivers fantastic grip on the road.
Traditionally 4x4s have been used in a variety of terrains, and for this tyre manufacturers have designed all terrain 4x4 tyres, which can be used on both the road, and in mud. All terrain tyres for 4x4 vehicles have advanced with the improved technology found in tyres, and now offer similar breaking distances on the road to standard road tyres.
All terrain tyres are also well known for the distance they can travel before needing replacement, with the harder tread compound used on such tyres making them wear less.
The third type of 4x4 tyres are the mud terrain 4x4 tyres, which are designed to be used the majority of the time in muddy fields. A farmer with a Land Rover used mostly on the farm may opt for these tyres, which can be used on the road, but are designed with grip in the mud in mind.
